The comprehensive body of knowledge that has built up with respect to the friction stir welding (FSW) of aluminium alloys since the technique was invented in 1. The basic principles of FSW are described, including thermal history and metal flow, before discussing how process parameters affect the weld microstructure and the likelihood of entraining defects. After introducing the characteristic macroscopic features, the microstructural development and related distribution of hardness are reviewed in some detail for the two classes of wrought aluminium alloy (non- heat- treatable and heat- treatable). Finally, the range of mechanical properties that can be achieved is discussed, including consideration of residual stress, fracture, fatigue and corrosion. It is demonstrated that FSW of aluminium is becoming an increasingly mature technology with numerous commercial applications. In spite of this, much remains to be learned about the process and opportunities for further research and development are identified. Keywords: Friction stir welding, Aluminium alloys, Microstructure evolution, Plastic flow, Residual stress, Mechanical properties, Thermomechanically affected zone. Introduction. Historical background and principles. Radically new joining processes do not come along very often: friction stir welding (FSW) was one such event, being invented by the TWI in 1. By the end of 2. 00. TWI had issued 2. FSW. The principal features are shown in Fig. The side of the weld for which the rotating tool moves in the same direction as the traversing direction, is commonly known as the 'advancing side'; the other side, where tool rotation opposes the traversing direction, is known as the 'retreating side'. Frictional heat is generated, principally due to the high normal pressure and shearing action of the shoulder. Friction stir welding can be thought of as a process of constrained extrusion under the action of the tool. The frictional heating causes a softened zone of material to form around the probe. As the tool is traversed along the joint line, material is swept around the tool probe between the retreating side of the tool (where the local motion due to rotation opposes the forward motion) and the surrounding undeformed material. The extruded material is deposited to form a solid phase joint behind the tool. The process is by definition asymmetrical, as most of the deformed material is extruded past the retreating side of the tool. The process generates very high strains and strain rates, both of which are substantially higher than found in other solid state metalworking processes (extrusion, rolling, forging, etc.). Fig. 1. Schematic diagram of FSW process. Friction stir welding is therefore both a deformation and a thermal process, even though there is no bulk fusion. The maximum temperature reached is a matter of some debate. FRICTION STIR WELDING - researchgate.net PPT. Presentation Summary : INTRODUCTION. FRICTION STIR WELDING. FSW is a solid state joining process in which the material.Thermocouple measurements during FSW of aluminium alloys suggest that, in general, the temperature stays below 5. There is evidence of incipient melting for some aluminium alloys (e. The workpiece flow stress will fall rapidly as the solidus is approached, so that heating of the nugget at the tool/workpiece interface limits the available heat generation by reducing the torque. In addition considerable work has focused on using FSW to join dissimilar aluminium alloys. A summary of the AWS designations for wrought Al alloy groups and AWS basic temper designations applicable to heat- treatable Al alloys is contained within Table 1. Since FSW is a solid state process, it can be used to join all common aluminium alloys, including the 2xxx, 7xxx and 8xxx series which are normally challenging or impractical to weld by fusion processes. A key distinction is between non- heat- treatable and heat- treatable alloy series. In work hardened alloys (e. In age hardened alloys, the weld will normally be heated well above the dissolution temperature of the initial precipitates, enabling dissolution, reprecipitation and overaging to occur. Friction stir welded aluminium alloys can therefore contain microstructures covering the entire spectrum of normal tempers. A recent ASM speciality handbook also covers FSW and friction stir processing. It is therefore considered timely to correct this omission. The present review draws on a wide selection of published data to summarise current understanding of the complex relationship between welding parameters, microstructure and properties for FSW of many aluminium alloys. Process modelling of FSW has evolved in parallel with empirical process development, and provides physical insight into all of these relationships. Since FSW modelling has been reviewed elsewhere. This leads to higher joint completion rates for FSW, even though the welding speeds may be lower. The latter depends very much on the specific equipment used, and comparisons are difficult. For example, the absence of a filler wire means that the process cannot easily be used for making fillet welds. Similarly, the fully mechanised nature of the process prevents its use for applications where access or complex weld shape is best suited to a manual process. The presence of a hole at the end of the weld from which the probe was withdrawn is often quoted as a disadvantage. In practice, this has seldom been a significant problem, as there are many possible solutions, which have been considered elsewhere. Although the process may reduce the strength of aluminium alloys, this can be compensated for if necessary by appropriate design of the joint, for example by locally increasing the thickness, but in most cases no changes are made. Process economics are generally considered favourable, but specific published data are lacking. However, it is known that the process drastically reduces weld preparation costs, skilled welder requirements and repair rates. Efficient power consumption is dependent on matching the size of machine being used to the size of weld being made, although this is not always a practical option. Fig. 2. Triflute MX tool - it is possible to use this tool with zero tilt angle; d) a 5. Triflat tool designed specifically for welding thicker sections. Applications. Commercial applications have been reported across many industries, and some selected examples are shown below which illustrate the widening appeal of the process. This list is representative rather than exhaustive, and it should be emphasised that new applications are appearing all the time. It should be noted that FSW does not restrict the operating temperature range of aluminium alloys, with applications ranging from cryogenic temperatures (e. Most FSWs used in production are butt welds, although lap welds and friction stir spot welds are also being applied with increasing frequency. Marine. It is believed that the first commercial application of FSW was the joining of 6xxx series alloy extrusions for use in fish freezing plants for fishing vessels. Friction stir welding has been used extensively in the aluminium superstructures of cruise ships such as the 'Seven Seas Navigator' which contain many kilometres of friction stir welds, mostly in 6xxx grade extrusions. The world's largest aluminium vessel, the Japanese fast ferry 'Ogasawara', launched in 2. FSW in its superstructure. The process has also been adopted for the large fuel tank for the Space Shuttle. The first aircraft to make extensive use of FSW in its airframe, the Eclipse 5. The needs of the automotive sector have driven the development of robotic FSW, to cope with the complex shapes and high volume/low cost culture of this market. These include tailoring microstructures for subsequent deep drawing and superplastic forming operations, and the ability to refine locally the microstructure of castings (for example, around stress concentrations, where a superior wrought microstructure would be preferable). Friction stir processing is not considered further in the present review. Friction stir welding process. Flow mechanisms and tool design. The metal flow and heat generation in the softened material around the tool are fundamental to the friction stir process. Material deformation generates and redistributes heat, producing the temperature field in the weld. But since the material flow stress is temperature and strain rate sensitive, the distribution of heat is itself governed by the deformation and temperature fields. We have attached a video of general stretching program for after a workout using some simple techniques called static stretches. General Stretching ProgramsUnderstand that a stretching program can be different, sport/exercise specific and and individual as much as an exercise program. Here is the transcript for a general stretching program – part 1. Sally: Hi. I’m here with Cameron Corish from Core Health Coaching, and today he is going to take me through a general, general stretching program for when you’ve finished working out. Just stretching all the major muscles. Now, I don’t like stretching. I’m not going to lie to you. Generally, people are stretchy people or they’re not. If you’re a stretchy person it’s because you’re generally fairly stretchy and you’re already fairly good at it. If you’re like me and you’re not stretchy, there are two good reasons to stretch. Actually, there are many, but the two good ones that I find resonate with most people are a) stretching programs make exercises easier and b) stretching programs make you hurt less. Okay, after we’ve finished the workout as we talked about is a general stretching program, so we’re going to go through the main muscle groups. To be honest, if you’ve done a running session, you might not have to do a lot of the upper- body stuff, but if you’ve done a lot of upper- body, you might not have to do as much on the legs. Just as getting all of the stretches in so that we’re covering all of the main muscle groups. The first one we’re going to start on is calves. We’re going to use this tree as a bit of a prop. We’re going to put one leg forward and it’s the back one that we’re actually working on the calves through here.
You notice with Sally, she’s got a straight leg through here, pushing the hips forward towards the tree is really going to push that a little further out. We need to make sure we’re not lifting the heel off the ground, okay? As soon as Sally takes the heel off the ground, you’re really not stretching that back of the leg. Make sure the heel’s nice and flat and moving the hips as far forward as you possibly can with that. For someone who’s not stretchy, you’ve got a good range there. Sally: I’ve been practicing. Cameron: Right, so the next one is almost exactly the same. The different muscle but it’s actually still within the calf group. I’ll get you to do the same positioning up through the tree and, this time, what we’re going to do is not lock in the knee. We’re going to push the knee down. Not so much the body, just pushing the knee forward down. Again, just at this point, this is where Sally’s starting to come off a little bit through that one there. Just really making sure that the heel is on the ground through there and the hips are nice and forward. Sally: How long should you hold stretches for, ideally? Cameron: After the session, you can do 2. Before a session, when you’re doing some corrective stretches, a little bit of a different technique so five to seven seconds at the start. This is just to really let the muscles relax after your tightening session. Good, how did that feel? Sally: Yeah, good. There’s two major ones, so there’s several little things you can do with calves. That’s good, yeah. Cameron: Yeah, okay. We’re working our way up the body. Next one is quad muscles. Again, we’ll use this tree as a bit of an example. We’re bringing the heel up to our bottom. General Stretching Program For SeniorsI think you’ve done this one before and just making sure, again, we’re moving our hips forward, knees are close together through here and not leaning the body forward. We’re trying to bring the shoulders back and the hips forward at the same time. Then you’ll feel that through the front part of the quad muscle there. Right. Sally: It’s true when you stand up straighter, you do feel a lot more. Cameron: All right, great. The next one’s our hamstring muscle. With the hamstring, we might do that one on the ground over here. Sally: Right. Cameron: Just one leg out, nice and straight. You can sit up for me and then bring your heel into your groin. We’re in this sort of position through there. Sitting up nice and upright and then what we’re going to do is, just try and touch our toes. For most people we can’t touch our toes so I just want you to start nice and low and then gradually work towards your toes. You can see here, there’s a lot of flexibility in the hamstring. She told me she wasn’t stretchy. Sally: I failed normal stretches last week. Cameron: One of the things to be careful with this one, a lot of people will get a lot of stretch through here, but if you straighten up through the back through this lower area here, understand the hamstring’s connected to your lower back. This lower back should be nice and straight and you’re going to get a lot more stretch through there. Then, obviously, change around to the opposite side. To make this a little bit harder, if you need it to be, is then working on the outside part of the foot. Coming down through here and then, obviously, the hand through there as well is just going to make it a little bit tougher. If you’re lucky enough to be as flexible as Sally through there, otherwise we’ll just show the one coming up through here. Make sure that that leg is nice and straight and slowly work towards your ankle. Remember, keep that lower back nice and flat and you’ll feel that in the back part of the leg. For some people, they will feel it behind their knees. That is okay as long as the pressure isn’t too much. Remember, we’re trying to hold this for a little bit longer so you don’t want the pain to be about a nine or a 1. We should be around about seven or eight. Sally: Mm- hmm (affirmative). The small differences you have pointed out are hardly enough to hamper mutual intelligibility (and they rarely follow the lines denoted by the codes Ethnologue set up), which is indeed what a native speaker said when Metaknowledge consulted them before we merged the lects, following the linguistic literature which mostly treats Rwanda, Rundi, Vinza etc as dialects of one language. You may note that Serbian, Croatian, etc also have separate Wikipedias, but this is not an impediment to the merger of them, either. Is there some way to edit Module: labels/data/regional to categorize into ? Come to think of it, do we even want CAT: Rwanda to be for terms in the Rwanda variety of Rwanda- Rundi? Because Rwanda is also a country, and other categories named for countries are top- level topic categories, e. So maybe we should keep CAT: Rwanda for the country and find some other name for . CAT: Kinyarwanda for the dialect? At the time it wasn't implemented because e. The dialects should display the name of the country in the label, but simply categorise as CAT: Kinyarwanda and CAT: Kirundi, in my opinion. Perhaps someone could add code that would make category names language- specific; this would also be useful for distinguishing e. Failing that, we could just use a different label . Some casual editors still capitalise Persian and Hebrew transliterations. Obviously, Cyrillic, Greek and Armenian capitalisations should match the native spelling and they use mostly automatic transliterations, anyway. Languages, which DON'T use capital letters in their scripts but capitalised transliterations are allowed are only: Some Chinese lects - Mandarin, Min Nan, Min Dong, Hakka but not Cantonese, Wu, etc.), Japanese and Korean. No need to to do anything with these languages. My request is mainly for these: Capital letters for Arabic, Hindi, Bengali and various Indic languages (e. Dravidian group) have a different phonetic value but they are mostly converted and largely rely on automatic transliterations. Arabic entries have been mostly fixed by User: Benwing/User: Benwing. Persian, Hebrew, Yiddish, Pashto still use capital letters. They all need to be turned to lower case in entries and translations, including proper nouns.- -Anatoli T.(. There's the added complication that the transliterations have entries, and they're often capitalised even though the original script had no such distinction. But I believe that we shouldn't be inventing case distinctions, not just for Gothic but for any language. This includes Japanese, Chinese, as well as old European languages written before casing was a thing. For Chinese and Japanese, the case distinctions are invented for us by the language governing bodies, and while I still don't like it, it's still more acceptable to me than inventing case distinctions ourselves. What about the rest, though? There's no official spelling for Old English; Englisc was not written with a distinct capital letter in any manuscript. It's an anachronism based on modern English spelling. The problem with languages like Latin, however is that the capitalization rules changed throughout the history of what we consider to be Latin. In Classical Latin, there was only one lettercase, but later on (well, much much later on) capitalization did develop. But I also guarantee that for most of our early modern languages, the attested capitalization is different from our capitalization. It's a big mess and most people seem to be against solving it. In official use, Georgian is unicase, but it is still acceptable to capitalize using Asomtavruli letters. For languages that have optional capitalization like Latin and Georgian, I would say to definitely keep the capitalized transliterations, even if the translation does not use capitalization. Nicole Sharp (talk) 0. September 2. 01. 6 (UTC). No, not true. Modern Georgian does not have optional capitalization. Anyways, Asomtavruli has its own unicode range, so optional capitalization can be handled by the module.- -Giorgi Eufshi (talk) 0. September 2. 01. 6 (UTC).
